November 4th, 1746- The Battle of St. Thome

Conflict: Austrian War of Succession

Combatants: French vs. Indians

Location: India

Outcome: French victory

In an extension of the Austrian War of Succession, the British and French engaged in hostilities in India. After seizing the British base at Madras, the Indian leader and British ally Nawab Anwar-ud-din committed a large army to recapture the city on September 21st but was defeated by the French. Five weeks later, a greatly outnumbered force of French and native troops, less than 1000 men, again defeated the army of Nawab Anwar-ud-din at St. Thome. The 10,000-strong Nawab army was routed by the Europeans.

  • Hostilities ceased with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in October of 1748.
