Conflict: American Civil War
Combatants: Confederates vs. Federals
Location: Tennessee (USA)
Outcome: Federal victory
On this first day of the Battle of Chattanooga, Federal General Joseph Hooker's 2 Corps assaulted Lookout Mountain on the Confederate right wing in a heavy fog. The Confederates are driven back and withdraw during the night.
Points of Interest:
The fog on Lookout Mountain was so thick that Hooker's troops had advanced to within a few yards of the Confederate lines before the belligerents were aware of one another.
The Battle of Lookout Mountain is also known as the "Battle Above the Clouds" due to the dense fog on the mountain that day.
