With the German invasion of France underway, the British moved armor south to assist their French allies and counterattack the invaders. The offensive failed, however, and the British and French were pushed back by the German's 7th Panzer Division.

The 7th Panzer Division was commanded by General Erwin Rommel.
The mass evacuation of British, French, and Belgian soldiers from Dunkirk began seven days later.
