December 30th, 1460 - The Battle of Wakefield

Outcome: Lancaster victory


At Wakefield in December of 1460, the outnumbered Yorkist army of Richard of York, was defeated by Lancastrian forces under the command of Henry Beaufort. Both Richard and his oldest son were killed in the battle and the Yorkist army broken.

Points of Interest:


  • The War of the Roses would rage for another fifteen years ending with the death of Richard III at Bosworth Field and the rise of the Tudor dynasty.

  • Henry, the Earl of Richmond, was crowned Henry VII in 1485, the first of the Tudor line of English kings.
